What is a Virtual Private Network (VPN)?

Explanation of what a VPN is and what it may be used for both at home and in the workplace.

A Virtual Private Network is frequently shortened to the acronym VPN. A VPN allows secure access to a network from an outside location.

A common use of a VPN is for an employee to connect to their workplace's network from home. For example, to access an intranet or files on a network drive.

VPNs are also used outside of the workplace by individuals to secure their internet access and bypass censorship. There are a large number of VPN Providers available for this.
