Set up in 1949 by Western powers. NATO stands for North Atlantic Treaty Organisation. A type of collective security programme - if one country was threatened others would defend it. Set up as a result of Berlin Blockade. Russia felt capitalist countries were "ganging up on it" (didn't like it).
